Nowadays, the main manufacturing processes of heat sink includes cnc machining, extrusion, die casting, etc., and their respective advantages and disadvantages are also obvious.
CNC Machining technology mainly uses turning, drilling, milling, grinding and other machine tools. In order to obtain some special and fine shapes, it is necessary to use cnc machining method during the manufacturing process of heat sinks. CNC Machining is mainly used for processing heat sink bottom surface , heat sink fins, corners, grooves, and logo engraving, etc. The advantages of cnc machining is that it is widely used and fine machined surfaces, tolerance, etc, but the disadvantage is that the tool wears quickly and needs higher labor cost.
The first working procedure of extrusion production of heat sink is melting and casting, which goes through the steps of batching, melting and casting, and finally makes the “round cast rod”, a common raw material for aluminum heat sinks. Then, according to the cross-section design of heat sinks, the extrusion is designed and manufactured accordingly, and the heated round cast rod is extruded from the heat sink mould by using an extruder. There is also an air-cooled quenching process and a subsequent artificial aging process during extrusion to complete the heat treatment strengthening. Extrusion processing of heat sinks can produce solid and hollow profiles with complex cross-section shapes. Extrusion manufacturing method can improve the microstructure and mechanical properties of metal materials. After quenching, the mechanical properties of heat sinks in extrusion direction are much higher than those of similar products produced by other processing methods.
Aluminum die casting is a widely used single aluminum alloy product processing technology. After melting the aluminum alloy ingot into a liquid state, it is filled into a die-casting mold, die-casted by a die-casting machine at one time, and then cooled and subsequently treated, thus making a single heat sink.
The advantage of aluminum die casting is that it is integrated and has no interface impedance; Thin, dense or complex heat sink fins can be manufactured, and some heat sinks with special designs can be easily realized. The obvious disadvantage of aluminum die casting is that the mechanical properties and thermal conductivity of materials can not be satisfactory. Excessive flow lines and oxide slag on the heat sink surface during die casting will reduce the heat conduction effect. When cooling, the internal miniature holes are too many and thermal conductivity decreases accordingly.
